Ensuring Transparency and Accountability in Malawi's NGO Sector

Our Mandate

We carry out the following duties and functions in order to effectively regulate NGOs and CSOs in Malawi

Registration & Regulation

The Authority is responsible for registering all NGOs operating in Malawi and ensuring their activities comply with the law.

Maintain NGO Database

Create and manage an official register of NGOs, including a database and a public documentation centre, as well as additional registers for exempt and international NGOs.

Process NGO Applications

Review and adjudicate all NGO registration applications and confirm that applicants meet the required compliance and reporting obligations.

Enforce Compliance

Safeguard sector integrity by withholding, suspending, or cancelling NGO registrations when organisations fail to comply with legal requirements.

NGO Data Sharing

Ensure transparency by offering free public access to NGO records, returns, and the national register through our documentation centre.

Advise on NGO Incentives

Assess and recommend appropriate incentives for NGOs under relevant laws, providing guidance to the Minister as required.

Conduct Research and Advise Government

Commissions surveys, enquiries, and research to generate insights and advise the Government on matters affecting NGOs.

Capacity Building & Training

Provide capacity-building trainings that equip NGOs with key knowledge on regulations, leadership, accountability, and corporate governance, helping strengthen their performance and compliance.
